KOZHIKODE: For the past two years, ever since the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) sponsored drinking water project came to the region, it has been a bumpy ride for the residents of the 45-km-stretch between Balussery and Kozhikode. The roads in the region were dug up in parts to lay pipelines but have never been restored to its previous state. For the drivers of the 70-odd buses who operate on this dilapidated route, it is nothing less than nightmare.
Now the bus owners and residents of the region are planning to start an indefinite strike against the JICA project. According to them though the PWD filled the dug up road with mud, it has make the road slippery especially during the rainy season. The trade unions and the bus owners' associations have already submitted a memorandum to the district collector, minister for water resources and the JICA officials. Read more
