Mecosabagh railway overbridge in bad shape

NAGPUR: The ordeal undergone by motorists using the Mecosabagh railway overbridge (RoB) seems never ending. The approach ramp on either sides of the RoB is in such bad shape that there is little space left for the motorists to drive.

Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) had constructed the RoB. The construction work of the 640 meter RoB began in early 2000 and was completed on May 5, 2005. But almost three-fourths of this 640-meter RoB (especially the approach ramp) is in a bad shape. This RoB is an important life line for traffic as it connects west and north Nagpur from Kadbi Chowk to Gondwana Chowk in New Colony, Sadar. Read more

Tribal students' protest siphoning off of funds

NAGPUR: The tribal development department of the state government has more than 450 hostels across Maharashtra, having more than 42,000 student inmates. The students living in these hostels are entitled to facilities like uniforms, books, computers and internet. State government had issued a GR in November last year that made these tribal students eligible for many allowances, which the students allege they have not received in the last one year.

Students from all nine tribal hostels in the city observed a dharna at Hanuman Nagar hostel and locked the offices of their hostels on Saturday demanding the said GR be implemented properly. The students say they have spoken to all authorities about the problems they are facing but no action has been taken. The dharna, which started in the city today, will soon spread to other cities of the state if no action is taken, they added. Read more

MCC to take up asphalting work from December

MANGALORE : Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) will take up asphalting work from December. Roads where city buses ply will be asphalted on priority basis, and it will depend on the funds available with the corporation, MCC Commissioner Harish Kumar has said.

Heart to heart for slum dwellers on community radio

New Delhi :  On World Heart Day, a programme  Dil ki baat on cardiovascular ailments and their preventions has been started on community radio in the slums in Vasant Kunj. The initiative is a joint venture by an educational institute and a hospital. 

On Saturday, the programme was broadcasted all day long. “It aims to sensitise people about the essentials of heart diseases and offer precautionary tips. It is designed to reach out to those who have scant access to modern communication tools like the print media and internet,” said a hospital official. People from Masudpur, Rangpuri Pahari, and Kusumpur slums can listen to the programme. Jagannath Institute of Management Studies (JIMS) and BLK super speciality hospital are part of the initiative. Garbage dump worries SBS Nagar

SBS NAGAR: With vector-borne diseases starting to grip the city, residents of Housefed Complex in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar are a worried lot as the garbage dump near the colony has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

The garbage dump has become a nuisance in the area, complained Babita Shamihok, a homemaker and resident. She said, "Besides being an eye sore, it is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and flies, especially at this time when vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue are common." Read more

Poverty, poor schools pushing kids to child labour

RAMANATHAPURAM: The public hearing held in Ramanathapuram town on Saturday revealed various socio-economic factors which drove children from the Kadaladi block here to take up jobs in spite of their desire to continue their education. Child Rights and You (CRY) along with its partnering NGO, Rural Workers Development Society in the locality carried out the study in 27 villages of Kadaladi block in the district which revealed that 365 children below 18 years of age are employed in various industries.

The jury consisted of Madras high court senior advocate R Sudha Ramalingam, state representative of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights Henri Tiphagne, B Parthasarathy from Madurai Kamaraj University Teacher's Association (MUTA) and P Thirumalai, a journalist. The children narrated that the lack of sustainable income, non-availability and poor accessibility to schools in the locality and lack of proper transportation had forced them to take up even hazardous professions. Waterlogging woes in east Patel Nagar

PATNA: Even months after the problem erupted, Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has failed to solve the insanitation problem faced by the residents of east Patel Nagar. For three months, sewage water seeps into nearly 100 houses situated on either side of road nos 1, 2 and 3. In the absence of regular maintenance of the sewerage line, it has got choked and gives foul smell.

Government plans to promote Buddhist sites as new tourist hotspots

VARANASI: In an effort to attract at least half of the total Buddhist population spread in 35 countries by promoting Buddhist pilgrimage sites, is the new mantra of the ministry of tourism, Government of India and the states enshrining the Buddhist pilgrimage sites. 

The call was given during the inauguration of the three-day International Buddhist Conclave(IBC)-2012 at a hotel compound in Nadesar area on Saturday. Due to the last-minute cancellation of chief minister Akhilesh Yadav's visit, Union minister of state for tourism Subodh Kant Sahai, along with the ministers of tourism of UP, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha inaugurated the conclave. Rajkot Municipal Corporation to begin buses on BRTS corridor from Monday

RAJKOT: The Rajkot Municipal Corporation(RMC) will start to run AC buses on Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridor from Monday. RMC will not charge fee from commuters for the next three months.

RMC officials said that high floor luxury buses would be deployed for commuters on the 10.7 km pilot project of BRTS from Gondal Road chowkdi to Jamnagar Road chowkdi on 150-feet Ring Road. Orissa HC tightens anti-pollution noose on govt hospitals

CUTTACK: The Orissa high court on Friday directed the State Pollution Control Board to initiate criminal proceedings against seven district headquarter hospitals for continuous violation of Biomedical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules. "The division bench of Justice L Mohapatra and Justice I Mohanty has directed the board to file criminal cases against the in-charges of bio-medical waste management at the district hospitals of Angul, Dhenkanal, Bhadrak, Balasore, Boudh, Deogarh and Sambalpur under the Environment Protection Act, 1988," said amicus curie P R Das.

The directive came in the wake of a petition filed by a social organization, Maitree Sansad. It has alleged that these hospitals have been long flouting biomedical waste handling rules. Even the high court-appointed advocate's committee had visited these hospitals and found deficiencies in the biomedical waste disposal system. Warnings were also issued to these hospitals but nothing was done by them to improve the situation, stated the amicus curie. Read more

Scientific landfills cause no harm

BANGALORE: Subash Menon, who founded telecom software company Subex and who is now focusing on waste management, said landfills needed to be scientifically built to avoid resistance from people living around it.

"If you simply dump garbage on tracts of land, you get the problem of germs and birds, which impact the surroundings," Menon said. He said it was necessary to segregate garbage, process all that can be processed, and put only the residue or inerts in the landfill. "An essential part of a scientific landfill is a bottom layer of clay and sand and a piping system that can filter and drain out the toxic fluids from inerts, process it, and recharge it into the ground," he said. Enrolment of OBC students in colleges goes up, that of SC, ST still low: survey

NEW DELHI : The percentage of students from the Other Backward Communities who have enrolled in higher education has gone past 27 per cent, but the number of students from the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes continues to be unacceptably low, an official survey has revealed.

Indicating an impressive increase in the Gross Enrolment Ratio from 15 per cent in 2009-10 to 18.8 per cent in 2010-11, the survey shows that the enrolment of women has increased substantially from 12.7 per cent to 16.5 per cent during this period, as against that of men, where the increase has been from 17.1 per cent to 20.9 per cent. This, even as only 1 per cent of the universities and 9 per cent of the colleges are meant exclusively for girls. Read more

Surat residents use drains to dump garbage

SURAT : The Surat Municipal Corporation(SMC) is seriously thinking of spreading awareness among the residents of particular areas in the diamond city for not throwing garbage into the sewer lines.

Recently, the civic body had to hire a specialized machine from New Delhi at the cost of Rs 40 lakh for cleaning the clogged drains in Katargam zone. In the clean-up exercise started from the past two days, more than 40 containers of garbage dumped in the drains was removed from the sewer lines in Katargam on Friday. Read more

4,100 buses to boost travel in Haryana

Chandigarh : Travelling in Haryana is set to be a faster and hassle-free experience for the aam aadmi, with the state government today unveiling its ambitious new transport policy aimed at adding over 4,100 new buses to the existing fleet in both the public and private sectors.

While 3,519 permits would be offered under the new stage carriage permit scheme covering 1,017 routes to private bus operators, the Haryana Roadways is set to add nearly 600 buses to increase its fleet strength to 4,150 during the current financial year, sources said here today. Read more

Bring down excise, service tax to 8%, Kelkar panel recommends

NEW DELHI: The government should step up the process of stake sale in state run firms, sell minority holdings in Specified Undertaking of the Unit Trust of India (Suuti), Hindustan Zinc and Balco, and take steps to monetize under-utilized land resources of public sector enterprises, port trusts and railways, a panel set up to chart out the roadmap on fiscal consolidation said on Monday.

Urban local bodies lax in enhancing property tax collections: Ravindra

BANGALORE : The urban local bodies (ULBs) in the State, excluding Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), were being lax in increasing their property tax collections, averred A. Ravindra, advisor to Chief Minister on Urban Affairs.

The Karnataka High Court on Friday set aside a Single Bench order directing Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) to conduct supplementary examinations for nearly 30,000 BE students who could not join the third semester after failing in more than four subjects in the first two semesters.

 A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice B V Nagarathna passed the order after hearing an appeal filed by the VTU challenging the September 3 order directing the university to notify exams within a week. Read more

Urban health centres for poor needed

Universal Health Coverage in India is projected to come up by 2022 after two five-year plans but inadequate human resources willing to serve in rural areas seems to be the hurdle.

 “The state has over 2,300 primary health centres (PHCs) which are far more than what the state requires (which is 1,500) but most of these primary health centres are severely understaffed,” said Dr M R Mohanraju, Executive Director of the Karnataka State Health System Resource Centre. Read more

BHUBANESWAR: In the age of retail boom and shopping malls, the poor man's cooperative store is now almost a closed chapter. With around 5000 cooperative societies and a membership of around 80 lakh people in Odisha, the cooperative movement in the region is sluggish.

Inherent weaknesses such as over dependence on state help, lack of initiatives, inadequate and unstable business operations and accumulated loss are the major factors crippling the cooperative sector in the state, said experts at the East Zone Cooperative Conference organized here on Friday. Solar power to aid Orissa crime busters

BHUBANESWAR: Acute power deficiency in rural police stations is delaying the implementation of much-vaunted cyber link project -- Crime Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) -- in the state, prompting the government to opt for solar power backup.

During a review meeting on CCTNS in Bhubaneswar recently, the government identified 125 police stations in different districts to develop solar power systems in the first phase. The Centre-sponsored CCTNS will link all police stations in the country with a cyber network. State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) is the implementing authority of the project in Odisha. Read more
