India and the Oscars

Posted by Think India

We all know the Oscars, right. It's the annual American awards ceremony which is hosted by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to recognize excellence in cinemas. They have one category where they receive application from other countries. The category is Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. India also has been submitting films for this category since 1957. Each year we hope to get a nommination in the Oscars for that category, but as of now onky three Indian movies have been nominated for the Oscar awards. They are - Mother India, Salaam Bombay and Lagaan. Last indian movie to get an nomination under that category was Lagaan. This year also there is  an official entry to the Oscars and that is Tamil film Visaranai which is directed by Vetrimaran and produced by Dhanush. Visaranai is India's official entry to the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Films Category.

The national award winning and critically acclaimed film Visaranai is based on police brutality and corruption. It is a story of four migrant worker who face severe police brutality and put behind bars on false charges.Part of this movie is adapted from the novel 'Lock Up' written by M Chandrakumar.

The team is pretty excited about the official entry to Oscars. The last tamil film to get an official entry to the Oscar was Hey Ram which was directed by Kamal Hasan. Team is pretty hopeful of getting an nomination this year at the Oscars.

You can watch the official trailer of movie Visaranai here
