Hyderabad : At a time when farmers are driven to suicides because there is no water, in the Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh at least Rs.10,000 crore have been spent on a lift irrigation project that after 10 years still lies idle most of the year. Hardly three months in a year, after the rains, there is water inflow and even that can be lifted and supplied only if the water level at intake point is 74 metres and if power is available.
The Devadula lift irrigation project on the river Godavari was part of the late YSR Reddy's ambitious 'Jala-yagnam' to irrigate six lakh acres in the four drought-prone districts of Telangana. This is the biggest such project in India and second biggest in Asia. Read more

HUBLI : Most of the houses constructed under the flagship Aasare scheme of the Bharatiya Janata Party government in the villages of Kongawad and Aratti in Navalgund taluk of Dharwad district remain unoccupied. They stretch out in long lines of small yellow boxes baking under the hot April sun. The few that have been occupied have been extended with tin sheets or thatch to form sheds to accommodate a family’s cattle and other belongings. These are villages built to rehabilitate victims of the floods that ravaged several north Karnataka districts in October 2009, claiming 229 lives and reducing thousands of villages to rubble.

“The houses were ready two years after the floods, and it took another year for it to be formally inaugurated,” said Neelappa Jakkanavar, a farmer with two acres, who lives with his wife and three children in his small house. Indian IT brands Wipro and HCL along with global majors Cisco, Google Ericcson and Fujitsu have emerged the winners among companies in technology sector that provide energy solutions to help address climate change in the global IT-sector climate leadership assessment by Greenpeace International While Wipro secured a 5th position, HCL was ranked 13th in the sixth Cool IT Leaderboard that pitched 21 technology leaders against each other to find who comes out top in the fight to stop climate change. However good an idea, it is not worth sharing if not well executed. When red oxide appears shoddy, filler slab goes wavy, exposed wall has bad joints, tiled roof leaks, even good wood gets bent or materials used turn out to be of unacceptable quality, we repent and regret for trying out an alternative eco-friendly idea. Renewable technologies & greater efforts by emerging economies among few bright spots
New Delhi : The International Energy Agency (IEA) on Wednesday said the drive to clean up the world’s energy system had stalled. IEA Executive Director Maria van der Hoeven told the 23-member Clean Energy Ministerial despite much talk by world leaders and a boom in renewable energy through the last decade, the average unit of energy produced on Wednesday was “as dirty as it was 20 years ago”.
The rapid expansion of renewable technologies was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise bleak assessment of global progress towards low-carbon energy, IEA said in an annual report presented to the ministerial here on Wednesday. Read more

BANGALORE : A celebratory event was organised to mark the Earth Hour 2013 on Brigade Road recently. M B Dyaberi (I A S), Managing Director, KREDL (Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited) was the chief guest. The event gathered hundreds of supporters to mark the fifth edition of Earth Hour in the city.
The objective behind Earth Hour is to demonstrate action against Climate Change, and initiate a mass movement towards more sustainable and healthy use of energy sources.
Along with the ‘switch off’ at the Brigade Road, supporters at Indiranagar residents association also observed the switch off, along with students of NCBS and employees of major corporates. Earth Hour the largest global environmental movement united the country for one hour, as Indians from across cities switched off lights for an hour at 8:30 pm. Read more
