AHMEDABAD: Rural landlords are bracing themselves for charging less rent from their tenant farmers for the first time in several years, signifying a reduction in remuneration from the livelihood that sustains about half of India's population. While rentals are likely to be revised downwards in Punjab and Haryana, a revised formula is being devised in states such as Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan, where landlords get paid in kind.
The annual rental in Punjab will come down from Rs 25,000-30,000 per acre depending on the land quality to Rs 20,000-25,000 per acre in the contracts due to be signed soon, says Sukhjit Bhatti, a progressive potato farmer from Jalandhar. "Two consecutive years of bumper crop across the country, leading to poor returns, have led to this situation," he says, "This hasn't happened for a long time." Read more
